Thesis (Ed.D.)--Grand Canyon University, 2023.
The purpose of this quantitative, comparative study was to examine the differences in the AzMERIT reading and math scores between 89 students at a sports-oriented charter school and 89 at a traditional charter school in Arizona. The foundation of this study was to explore the connection between physical activity and academic outcomes, through comprehending the problem: It is not known what, if any, statistically significant difference exists in the reading and math scores between a sports-oriented charter school and a traditional charter school. The sample size was determined by a G*Power analysis for an independent samples t-test, assuming a medium effect size of d = 0.5, an alpha level of .05, and minimum power .80. The sample size for N1= 89 and N2 = 89 with a total sample size of 178. Two research questions asked is there a statistically significant difference between a sports-oriented charter school and a traditional charter school in terms of the thirdgraders' reading scores and math scores? The archived data was analyzed through a two sample independent t-test to compare the differences between the reading scores and math scores of two groups of third-graders from two regional charter schools in Arizona. The results indicated there was no statistically significant difference between a sports-oriented charter school and a traditional charter school in terms of the third-graders' reading and math scores. These findings indicate there is an importance regarding how students engage in physical activity at a sport-oriented school. This study may contribute important knowledge to the field of education because the research may help educators, curriculum experts, administrators in governing the process of developing curriculum and procedures to support Physical Education in school settings.
