Thesis (Ph.D.)--Grand Canyon University, 2023.
The purpose of this quantitative correlational-associative study was to explore if, and to what extent a statistically significant relationship existed between exercise behavior and well-being domains (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment) for adults with asthma in the United States. The theoretical foundation for this study was the PERMA model of well-being. A convenience sample of 288 adults with well-controlled to completely controlled asthma was obtained through Qualtrics, a web-based survey platform. The Asthma Control Test was used as inclusion criteria to select only adults with well-controlled to completely controlled asthma. Participants completed the Godin-Shephard Leisure Time Exercise Questionnaire to measure exercise behavior and completed the PERMA-Profiler to measure well-being domains (positive emotion, engagement, relationships, meaning, accomplishment). There were five paired hypotheses accompanying the research question, one for each respective PERMA well-being domain. The initially planned linear regression analysis for each hypothesis did not meet the necessary statistical assumptions, necessitating revision to a nonparametric Kendall's tau-b correlation. The results of each Kendall's tau-b correlation, evaluated at a corrected significance level of p < .01, were as follows: positive emotion: {CE}{THORN}b = .132, p = .001; engagement: {CE}{THORN}b = .155, p <.001; relationships: {CE}{THORN}b = .087, p = .034; meaning: {CE}{THORN}b = .139, p <.001; and accomplishment: {CE}{THORN}b = .137, p <.001. Results indicated a small effect size and a statistically significant relationship for four of the five domains with a post-hoc power level of 99.8%, supporting the value of future research.{A0}
