Since the enactment of the Title IX Educational Amendments Acts of 1972, females have benefitted from increased fair and equitable learning and participative opportunities from any educational institution, most notably increased participation in athletics. However, despite the exponential gains in athletic participation, females have not seen the same fair and equitable opportunities in athletic administration, as women, and specifically minority women, are underrepresented in athletic leadership roles, such as athletic director. The underrepresentation of minority female athletic directors in interscholastic, public school athletic departments in the United States is an under researched issue. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to examine the lived experiences of minority female athletic directors to gain an understanding regarding the barriers they face in acquiring the athletic director position. The conceptual framework of intersectionality was used as an undergirding to explore the impact dual-subordinate traits of race and gender have on minority females. A phenomenological, qualitative study design was employed using 10 semi-structured interviews conducted with minority female athletic directors, that currently work in secondary, public school athletic departments to help illuminate the perceived issues that have minority females so severely underrepresented in the athletic director position. From the data collected, six key themes emerged to include the importance of networking and mentorship, the need to appear overqualified for the position, and the need to alter physical appearances and behaviors to languish accepted gender and race-based stereotypes and appear more affable to the dominant homogenous group. The implication of findings also suggests that continued research exploring these perceived barriers is warranted in order to determine the central reasons minority females are so severely underrepresented in interscholastic athletic departments.
