Thesis (Ed.D.)--University of West Georgia, 2023.
Identifying leisure constraints in various leisure settings has been the topic of investigation for over thirty years; however, more research needs to focus on on-campus recreation program areas and race and gender-related constraints. This study used Shifman et al.'s (2012) quantitative instrument used to measure interpersonal, intrapersonal, and structural constraints based on Crawford et al.'s (1991) hierarchical model of leisure constraints. This study aimed to determine the influence of gender and race (African American/Black, Asian, and White) on leisure constraints (structural, intrapersonal, and interpersonal) to participation in campus recreation outdoor adventure, and intramural sports using three-way repeated measures ANOVAs. The sample consisted of 248 students from a R1 public in the southeast region of the United States. Results found significant differences in structural constraints for Asians than their White peers in intramurals. White males had more intrapersonal constrained than White females in outdoor programs, and White and Asian populations were more constrained than African American/Blacks in outdoor programs. Significant differences in intrapersonal constraints were found in intramural programs indicating African American/Blacks were more constrained than Whites.
