Thesis (Psy.D.)--The Chicago School of Professional Psychology, 2023.
In this paper, a critical-hermeneutical method is utilized to demonstrate how mental illness in its relation to sports performance is enframed in discourse and power practices that assert mental challenges or difficulties to be a detriment to sports performance. The prejudice, stereotyping, and discrimination against individuals perceived to experience mental illness, known as sanism, is explained. The elements of the biomedical model of mental illness and sports culture are examined to illustrate the manner in which they can oppress athletic competitors who experience mental illness. Examples of professional athletes' personal writings are presented as documentation of their unheard perspective, with special emphasis on those who perceive their suffering to be an asset to their sports performance. After completion of a secondary thematic analysis, four themes were inferred from the professional athletes' narratives. Furthermore, a discussion of the clinical implications and recommendations to mental health professionals are considered.
