Thesis (Ed.D.)--Concordia University Chicago, 2023.
Identity formation is a key developmental task of adolescence in the secondary setting. Adolescence is a time for students to explore, form, and develop a sense of self. Past research studies have been conducted on student-athletes' identity development and identity foreclosure, but at the collegiate level. While high school students have been included in past studies regarding identity development and foreclosure (Turkeli, 2020), the purpose of this study was to add to the subject knowledge at the high school level. By utilizing pre-established scales such as the Academic and Athletic Identity Scale (AAIS; Yukhymenko-Lescroart, 2014) and the Extended Objective Measure of Ego-Identity Status (EOM-EIS-2; Bennion & Adams, 1986) and two small focus groups, this mixed methods research study assessed a small sample of student-athletes in a secondary school to explore any relationships between identity foreclosure and athletic identity or demographic status. The quantitative data results showed that there was a weak and non-significant correlation between athletic identity and identity foreclosure as well as between certain demographic markers and identity foreclosure. The qualitative data results, however, revealed that while student-athletes felt supported to explore their identities both at school and at home, they also felt like both systems could be doing more to support them. Overall, the data collected were valid, but since the sample was small, the results were not generalizable.
