Thesis (M.A.)--California State University, Long Beach, 2023.
Although previous body image literature has focused on the female population, recent trends have indicated that males are equally susceptible to body image issues. Most of these issues revolve around two factors: the desire to increase muscularity and reduce body fat. Sport participation has been reported to positively influence an individual's body image perception; however, previous research has yet to examine the impact that the strength and conditioning (S&C) environment may have on a male athlete. Thus, this study examines the body satisfaction and functional and aesthetic perception of male adolescent athletes exposed to a S&C environment. A total of 77 participants completed a one-time Qualtrics online survey. Results indicated that S&C athletes reported higher body competency, aesthetic satisfaction, and lower body inadequacy. At the same time, non-S&C athletes reported higher levels of functional value. Overall, providing S&C resources to male adolescent athletes may positively influence their perception of body image.
