Thesis (D.P.T.)--California State University, Fresno, 2023.
BACKGROUND: Every year, 3.8 million individuals in the U.S. experience a concussion, with up to one-third of those suffering from prolonged symptoms lasting up to a month or more. Rest or low aerobic intensity interventions have been primarily prescribed in the early stages following concussion due to the fear of increasing symptoms with exercise. Recently, research has suggested implementing early aerobic exercise to reduce severity of symptoms, but there is little information on the dosing of these interventions. The purpose of this meta-analysis is to determine the efficacy of using early subsymptom aerobic exercise to reduce symptom severity following concussion. METHODS: PubMed, CINAHL, and SPORTDiscus were searched to find 5 studies eligible for this meta-analysis based on inclusion and exclusion criteria, and were analyzed with Meta Essentials software. The studies provided data on 2 outcome measures: the Post Concussion Symptom Scale to measure symptom severity, and the Balance Error Scoring System for balance abilities. RESULTS: Both outcome measures showed homogeneous results favoring aerobic exercise with grand effect sizes of 0.55 and 0.57 respectively. CONCLUSION: Early aerobic exercise was found to be an effective intervention to reduce symptom severity and increase balance abilities in individuals following concussion. Future research is needed to understand the how dosing can be optimized through the body's autonomic responses to exercise.{A0}
