Thesis (D.P.T.)--California State University, Fresno, 2023.
Adolescence is the phase of life between childhood and adulthood and is a time of rapid physical, cognitive, and psychosocial growth. Beyond the stressors that all adolescents face in this time period, some have the added stressor of being a student-athlete. The purpose of this study is to assess psychometric properties and analyze pre-season to post-season changes as well as investigate relationship to injury in female adolescent basketball players. Thirty participants (average age 15.5 years) from 2 high schools were recruited to participate in the study. Participants completed 2 surveys: The Athlete Burnout Questionnaire (ABQ) and the Positive and Negative Process of the Coach-Athlete-Parent Relationship (PNPCAP), once in the pre-season and again in the post-season. Participants also reported injuries during the 2 data collections. Participants experienced high burnout scores in the pre-season in the category of reduced sense of accomplishment. By the post-season, mean scores were in the high burnout range in all 3 categories of the ABQ. Coach-athlete-parent relationships became less positive by the post-season. Findings from this study suggest that there is no significant relationship between burnout and injury or coach-athlete-parent relationships and injury. Despite these findings, this study uncovered a trend of high burnout rates. Future research is needed to determine the effectiveness of a mindfulness intervention to lower burnout levels and reduce injury rate in this population.
