Thesis (D.P.T.)--California State University, Fresno, 2023.
Objective: To analyze sport competition anxiety and early specialization and explore their relationship to injury in female adolescent water polo and swim athletes. Methods: There were 26 athletes who completed preseason data collection and 6 athletes who completed postseason data collection from 1 southern California and 2 central California high schools. The athletes and their legal guardians signed a consent form then completed an intake form which included, but was not limited to, demographic and injury history. The participants were then given a 15-question Sport Competition Anxiety Test (SCAT) and a 6-question Early Specialization Scale (ES) to complete. At the end of the season, the participants revised their intake form to include injury information that may have occurred during the season and then completed the same surveys for postseason data collection. Results: At preseason, both SCAT and ES scores for the athletes were in the high category suggesting a link between the two variables. Sport competition anxiety was found to have a significant positive relationship with number of injury. Early specialization was not found to have a significant relationship with number and injury. Finally, SCAT scores did not change when comparing preseason to postseason. Conclusion: The results only found significance between sport competition anxiety and number of injury. While links between sport competition anxiety, early specialization, and number of injury were not found in this study, more research should be conducted with more participants to adequately examine the relationship between these variables.
