Thesis (D.P.T.)--California State University, Fresno, 2023.
.
Objective: This study surveyed 12-18-year-old high school adolescent female softball players pre to postseason on measures of lower extremity injuries, self-esteem, and trait anger. Methods: Sixteen participants completed postseason data collection from 2 southern California high schools. Participants and their guardians signed a consent form before participating, then participants completed an intake form detailing demographic information and any previous injuries sustained while playing softball. Participants completed the Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES) and the State Trait Anger Expression Inventory 2 for Child and Adolescents (STAXI-2 C/A) both at preseason and postseason. Finally, the intake form was updated to account for any new injuries reported at the end of the high school softball season. Results: The self-esteem averages trended upward from preseason to postseason, while trait anger remained the same over the course of the season. Twelve participants reported being injured at preseason while only 1 new injury was reported at postseason data collection. Due to a 60% attrition rate, advanced statistical analysis could not be run to determine any potential correlations between the variables and lower extremity injury. Conclusion: This study found no statistically significant relationship between self-esteem and lower extremity injury and trait anger and lower extremity injury due to high attrition rates at postseason data collection. Based on current literature within adolescents, more research is needed to determine the relationship between these psychosocial variables and injury.
