The recent pandemic exacerbated existing conditions and contributed to an increase in various mental health issues. It highlighted the need for a renewed focus on mental health services and proactive health management. Polyvagal theory is one such area that has received considerable attention amongst wellbeing practitioners but its application for general wellbeing is still relatively limited. Largely anecdotal and indirectly comparable evidence exists to support the use of self-administered vagus nerve exercises, such as breathwork and cold showers, as a method to improve general wellbeing. This study investigated the effects on subjective participant wellbeing, measured by the Psychological General Wellbeing Index (PGWB), after a 4-week period of cold showers and breathwork. Thirty-one participants completed a weekly routine of 5x 30 second cold showers and 4x 10-minute breathwork sessions each week for 4 weeks. Participants completed a PGWB, including additional qualitative feedback, before completing the 4 weeks of exercises and at the end of the 4 weeks. Total PGWB scores showed a statistically significant improvement for all survey dimensions, excluding General Health. The largest improvements in wellbeing were evidenced in the PGWB Vitality dimension. Smallest improvements were in the Depressed mood dimension. These results were supported by participant's qualitative feedback. The results indicate a strong support for further research into the efficacy of these exercises as a potential healthcare management tool endorsed by the wider psychology community. The results suggest that a focus on general wellbeing and anxiety would be most effective.{A0}
