Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northcentral University, 2024.
Though women's sports have seen an explosion of growth and popularity during the past decade, it cannot be ignored that many women do not consider themselves as mentors or coaches of sports. While women are increasingly becoming officials of men's football, baseball, hockey and basketball, the perceived barriers-sociological, psychological and practical-to coaching women's sports still appear formidable for many female athletes. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological was to explore female coaches' influence on female athletes who may aspire to have a career in sports through role congruity. By utilizing a qualitative methodology, I explored the foundation of female athletes' disinterest in coaching women's sports or the ability for them to be hired. Twelve collegiate female athletes were interviewed using a structured format.Numerous themes were suggested by the data and are presented for analysis. Participants discussed their experiences or lack thereof playing for women collegiate coaches, perceptions of men's and women's collegiate coaches sport and reflections on the components influencing collegiate female athletes to become collegiate coaches. The study sought to expose factors contributing to female collegiate athletes' disinterest, as well as explore the foundations of perceptions and attitudes concerning female collegiate sport coaches.
