Thesis (M.P.S.)--Pratt Institute, 2023.
This arts-based self-study explores the possible intersection, alignment, and divergence between the field and practice of art therapy and living in the Christian faith. This study centers around the research question of how one's developing art therapist identity can honor one's Christian identity. Some aspects of this question that were explored are: the differences and similarities between how an art therapy professional views the world and how a Christian may view it; the consequences that may arise if the therapist is Christian and the patient is not; and last but not least where a Christian therapist fits into the secular world and where the call to walk with Christ fits into one's calling to be a therapist. The methodology focuses on creating works of 2-dimensional art, such as paintings and drawings, which were based on personal perspectives of the field of art therapy and the faith of Christianity, and the ethical principle key terms from the American Art Therapy Association (2013). I applied the seven-step model of ethical decision-making developed by the American Counseling Association to deal with potential ethical dilemmas (Forester-Miller & Davis, 2016). This study also explores the anticipatory pushback that the Christian arts therapist may face from both the faith community and the secular world, the isolation that may arise from such a pushback, and where art therapy principles have the potential to collide with the values of Christianity.
