This paper explores how the charter school sector evaluates the success of specialized education programs in order that the Nature School can learn from these best practices and develop its own framework. The researcher conducted in-depth interviews with five evaluation experts and eight diverse charter school authorizers overseeing a significant percentage of schools nationwide. Five key evaluation components emerged from these interviews: Student and Family Satisfaction Survey (SFSS), Skill-Based Performance Assessments (SBPA), Equity-Based Assessment (EBA), Pedagogical Reviews (PR), and Graduate Proficiency Demonstrations (GPDs). The model that emerged from this research is one that seeks parental insights, combines this with qualitative and quantitative assessments on skill acquisition, and gradually improves lesson plans to ensure equity. This paper provides in-depth details around charter authorization and the critical insights they can provide around program evaluation. Ultimately, the Nature School will need to decide on an approach to evaluation, and this landscape analysis provides the insights needed to make an informed decision.
