The purpose of this project was to complete a community risk assessment for Rialto, California on adolescent's substance use and truancy or chronic absenteeism. Substance misuse may begin at a young age and can coexist with students who are truant or chronically absent. The interrelationship and history of truancy and substance use prevention programs were discussed.By using the Communities that Care model, risk factors and indicators for the community, individual/peer, family, and school domains were assessed and evaluated. Data were collected for 13 risk factors and 29 indicators within the domains. Rialto's indicators were analyzed and compared to another nearby, more affluent city, the county, state, and nation. The model focuses on intervention and prevention methods that increase positive development and decrease poor outcomes. The need for evaluating risk factors within the community is important to analyze where protective factors can be implemented. Social work professionals can focus on improving the community with data on where more risk factors are located to provide interventions that can improve the community's well-being. For example, Rialto had a higher risk for the individual/peer domain with indicators of problem behavior, favorable attitudes toward problem behavior, and academic motivation. To address those risk factors, a program that assists youth through mentorship was recommended for the city of Rialto. Furthermore, social workers can initiate change by advocating for and implementing protective factors in the communities which would benefit society on a micro, mezzo, and macro level.
