The purpose of this quantitative, correlational study was to examine if and to what extent a correlational relationship between the components of burnout in currently active, non-supervisory mental health counselors and the perception of supervisors' authentic leadership in the United States. The components of burnout were Emotional Exhaustion, Depersonalization, and Personal Accomplishment. The theoretical frameworks were the Maslach Burnout Theory and the Authentic Leadership Theory. The study was guided by three research questions based on the individual components of burnout and the relationship with Authentic Leadership. Primary data was collected from a random sample of 152 mental health counselors using Centiment, a marketing agency to conduct data collection using two reliable and validated instruments: Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey and the Authentic Leadership Questionnaire. The three hypotheses were supported using Pearson's Correlation. A statistically significant positive correlation was indicated between Personal Accomplishment and Authentic Leadership, r (152) = .328; p < .001). Pearson's Correlation did not indicate a statistically significant correlation between Authentic Leadership and the two other components of burnout, which were Emotional Exhaustion r (152) = -.128, p = .116) and Depersonalization r (152) = -.130; p = .110). The significance of the study was the advancement of the body of knowledge, mediator for burnout, and organizational support. The findings were applicable to mental health professionals, the development of training programs and succession plans, researchers, and practitioners.
