The battle buddy relationship is a prominent concept among service members and has even worked its way into mainstream colloquial use. However, research on battle buddies is scarce and limiting because it never seemed to fully dive into what a battle buddy is or what it is like to have a battle buddy. The purpose of this qualitative, phenomenological study was to document and understand what a battle buddy is and what it is like to have a battle buddy from the perspective of Veterans. This study aimed to find the essence of a battle buddy and the battle buddy relationship. Data were collected through open-ended, semi-structured interviews of 7 Veterans. Thematic analysis was utilized to discover common themes among the individual experiences to inform future directions in research and practice. The identified themes included a battle buddy "always has your six," responsibility, dependability, loyalty, trust, an unspoken understanding between battle buddies, having shared experiences, feeling comfort and/or having fun, support, making sacrifices, and the relationship is lifelong. Overall, results indicate that a battle buddy and the battle buddy relationship is important to Veterans. These relationships provided a lifelong relationship with someone who demonstrated good qualities. This study complemented and supported previous research on battle buddies but also found that current research is lacking as it is not as robust or in-depth on the battle buddy or the battle buddy relationship. Future research could build upon this study to discover the potential benefits of having a battle buddy. Clinicians can use the characterization of battle buddies and the relationship from this study to offer insights to Veterans and help them work through issues while gaining an understanding of the Veteran that they might not have previously had. Additionally, the Department of Defense and Department of Veterans Affairs could use this study and future research to facilitate, foster, and encourage battle buddy relationships.
