There exists a general lack of understanding of how leadership training for aviation students impacts their ability to fly aircraft safely and effectively. More specifically, this problem presents an inability to identify the leadership training required for student pilots in U.S. university aviation programs. Consequently, the lack of leadership training for student pilots may affect flight safety and pilot employment tenure in the industry. This study aimed to identify the optimal leadership qualities student pilots require to maximize their employability and tenure as newly hired pilots. A phenomenological design within a qualitative methodology used research data gathered through online interviews. This research focused on understanding the preferences of aviation hiring managers from leadership perspectives, including pilot skills, teamwork, and communication. Online synchronous video interviews using communication software and questions concerning the status and need for leadership training for newly hired pilots offered experiential data on the efficacy of university flight training programs producing the next generation of pilots. Purposive sampling was used to select research participants employing or training airline pilots in the United States. Participants included airline chief pilots and university aviation program leaders. Following the interviews, the transcribed data were analyzed and coded to develop themes, conceptual categories, findings, and recommendations. Key findings included identification of a general lack of leadership skills in aviation students, a need for leadership training at the university level, an understanding of the benefits of leadership training from individual and industry hiring perspectives, and a delineation of various types of aviation leadership training. From a practical application, the recommendations from this study were developed to better prepare student pilots for entering the aviation profession. Furthermore, future research exploring leadership standards for university flight students upon graduation as a nexus with aviation industry leadership requirements may elucidate solutions to mitigate student pilot leadership deficiencies.
