The Problem. The purpose of the study was to determine the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral therapy as a treatment for females with chronic anger control problems. Method. Sixty-two white females (M age = 38 years), all of whom were volunteers and who scored above the mean for females on the Anger Inventory, were randomly assigned to one of two groups: an experimental group that was given cognitive-behavioral therapy and a control group that was given relaxation training. Both groups had six one-hour treatment sessions over a three-week period. Subjects were evaluated before and immediately after treatment, as well as six weeks later. Each dependent variable was analyzed by means of a 2 (treatment) x 3 (time) analysis of variance followed, where appropriate, by post hoc comparisons. Results. The first hypothesis, that subjects given cognitive-behavioral training would score significantly lower on the Anger Inventory after treatment than subjects given relaxation training, was only partially supported; the difference between the groups was significant at the six-week follow-up (p $<$.002) but not immediately after treatment had ended. The second and third hypotheses, that subjects given cognitive-behavioral training would score significantly lower on the awareness of anger and the expression of anger scales, respectively, of the Anger Self-Report after treatment than subjects given relaxation training, was not supported. The fourth hypothesis, that subjects given cognitive-behavioral training would score significantly higher on the Tennessee Self-Concept Scale after treatment than subjects given relaxation training, was not supported. All subjects improved significantly on all measures posttreatment (p $<$.05 or better). The results need to be interpreted with caution. Subjects had had previous experience with psychotherapy, and their responses to the author's questionnaire suggested that their problems with anger control were not serious. It is possible that use of male subjects and/or of a more stringent selection criterion for subjects would have yielded different results.
