Black young adults are disproportionately impacted by oppression and integral participants in activism to challenge and transform oppressive systems (Bort, 2020). This study uses a phenomenological approach (Sundler et al., 2019) to examine Black young adults' experiences with activism, mainly how they define activism, how they participate, and how they are motivated and challenged by their participation. Sociopolitical development theory frames this study's examination of Black young adults' activism (Watts et al., 2003). Thematic analysis of 22 interview transcripts reveals that Black young adults define and participate in activism in collective, digital, interpersonal, political, and artistic ways. Further, Black young adults' social identities (e.g., race, gender, sexuality), commitment to the legacy of activism, perceived impact, and sense of morals and responsibility motivate their participation. Contending with systemic oppression, perceived impact, harm, and working with others challenges Black young adults' participation in activism. This study has important implications for social justice, equity, and advocacy efforts.
