The first chapter of this thesis contains a review of literature pertaining to various aspects of language development, language evolution, problems of translation, the impact of culture on the development of both verbal and nonverbal communication rules, and even the nature of language itself. Following the exploration of extant literature is a selection of a larger novel (being written by me, the author of this thesis) which is entitled An Account of the Golden Sword and the Silver Tree and follows, primarily, two elves whose journey will determine the fate of their world. The selection from the novel contains academic and creative footnotes explaining how the concepts discussed in the literature review can be applied to the text.
