The production of historical knowledge in the Ming Dynasty was deeply influenced by policy questions in the civil service examinations. By the official regulations, there were three different fields of knowledge-classics, histories, and current affairs-in the policy questions, but by the numerical statement, especially in provincial and metropolitan examinations, more than half of the policy questions were about historical knowledge. One's ability to understand and analyze historical questions took a great part in his performance of "policy response essays" and affected his ranking and passing (or not). Thus, it was necessary for almost all the candidates to learn historical knowledge while making preparation for "policy response essays" writing in the future. Meanwhile, more and more history books, concentrating on policy questions, were edited and published by people with public and private background to fulfill examinees' needs.
