Philippe Gaubert is primarily known in the United States as the composer of several flute and piano pieces which are studied and performed frequently. He is also known as the co-author with Paul Taffanel of a definitive flute method, Methode complete de flute, which was published in Paris in 1923 and remains one of the most widely used flute methods in the world. Gaubert's contributions as a performing flutist, editor, teacher, and conductor are less known in the United States. Philippe Gaubert was born in Cahors, France, in 1879, and lived in Paris from the time he was six years old. Paul Taffanel took an early interest in Gaubert and taught him flute, solfege, and harmony. Gaubert entered the Paris Conservatory in 1893 and won the First Prize in Flute in 1894, the First Prize in Fugue in 1903, and the premier deuxieme Grand Prize for the Prix de Rome competition in 1905. He had a successful career playing flute in the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire and the Opera orchestra. He transcribed four pieces by A. Lefort for flute and piano in 1902-3, edited and revised the Celebre Methode complete de flute of Francois Devienne for the Boehm-system flute in 1909, and started a transcription and editing project called Les Classiques de la Flute around 1910 which was eventually taken over by Marcel Moyse, Louis Fleury, and Fernand Caratge. His largest editing project, the flute method based on materials of Paul Taffanel, was published in 1923 under the title of Methode complete de flute par Paul Taffanel et Philippe Gaubert. Gaubert's conducting career, which began officially in 1904 when he became the assistant conductor of the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire, led to an eminently influential musical position in Paris. He was chief conductor of the Societe des Concerts du Conservatoire from 1919-1938 and the chief conductor at the Opera from 1920-1940. He was Professor of the Flute Class at the Paris Conservatory from 1919-1931 and Professor of the Orchestral Conducting Class in 1932-1933. He wrote a number of concours pieces for use at the Paris Conservatory. His compositional output was constant, varied, and well-received by Parisian audiences. The majority of his compositions are essentially homophonic in texture and are based on melodic applications of major, minor, modal, and oriental scales that are combined with harmonic applications of various types of primary and secondary triadic, seventh, ninth, eleventh, and thirteenth chords. His idiom is essentially romantic-impressionism and he was highly influenced by Debussy and Faure. His music is transparent, delicate, sensuous, lyrical, and not complex rhythmically. . . .
