This study measured the effectiveness of contingent reinforcement on functional toy play in children with autism. Restricted and repetitive behaviors (RRBs) are one of the primary criteria of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) diagnosis. The field of applied behavior analysis (ABA), however, lacks research addressing these behaviors, specifically higher-level RRBs (H-RRBs). H-RRBs are characterized by more complex ritualistic behaviors such as restricted interests or an insistence on sameness (IS). The field of ABA is grounded in the philosophy of behaviorism and largely guided by the theory of operant conditioning. Most of the current research that has been conducted on H-RRBs in ABA includes elements of extinction or blocking, which often leads to an increase in more severe problem behaviors. This study aimed to use reinforcement alone to increase functional toy play with two males, ages four and five, who engaged in ritualistic toy play. An alternating treatments design (ATD) was used to compare treatment and control conditions. A generalization phase and a thinned reinforcement phase were included as well. Although a clear functional relation was not identified, a comparison of the baseline data and the intervention results shows the impact of unidentified environmental variables. Future research, including a component analysis, should be conducted to better identify the effects of confounding variables.
