How does an intimacy director approach, analyse and stage an intimate stage direction? This thesis puts the pedagogy of intimacy directors and the history of stage directions into conversation with the practical application of how intimate moments are staged in Canada. By interviewing 13 intimacy directors who work in the theatre industry in Canada, a deeper understanding and common themes of how they work with dramatic text emerges. As the role of intimacy director becomes more prevalent in theatre halls across the nation and the world, it is crucial to examine the affect they have in rehearsal halls, moment to moment, as well as the larger societal impact the practice is capable of.
