In "We Gefrunon: Aurality, Social Dramas, and Liminality in Old English Literature" I examine the role of performance in creating ludic and liminal spaces associated with Old English poetry and other Early Medieval English literature, especially creative narrative literature. Additionally, analysis of the representation of liminal spaces, and liminal personae, especially in relation to the liminal qualities of pilgrimage, exile, and eremitic life, features prominently. Finally, I examine how Victor Turner's theory of "Social Dramas" intersects with the theory of liminality and how it is reflected in the literature of the era.The concept of liminality is also a way to explore the formulaic theme of The Hero on the Beach in Old English poetry and to develop a better understanding of the pervasive presence of the theme of exile and its relationship to the Christian doctrine of life pilgrimage. Additionally, in this dissertation I have investigated the ways in which certain formulaic themes within early-English literature can inform our understanding of the link between exile and pilgrimage in Old English literature and the role that liminality plays in both. Developing a better understanding of these two related themes can help modern scholars to gain deeper insight into multiple aspects of early English life and cultural values. This dissertation examines Old English poetry and prose, Anglo-Latin literature, Ante-Nicene sources, and hagiography in order to contextualize the role of liminality in both shaping and reflecting Early-English thought and values, secular and religious alike. .
