Musicians seeking creative freedom feel compelled to explore, express, and experiment with spontaneity. A major element of creative spontaneity that many musicians wish to develop is the skill of improvisation. The skill of improvisation is underutilized in applied music performance studios at US public colleges and universities with music programs based on the conservatory model. Applied music faculty self-report artistic voice as a core curricular value, the importance of improvisation in developing that value, and their own underuse of improvisation in their studios. The relevant literature describes gaps between institutional ideals and their realized implementation in applied music studios. One of the primary issues is a limited working definition of the concept of improvisation. The goal of this research project is to offer a starting point for future research, advocate for radical organizational restructuring, and provide a resource reference for underutilized and new methods of improvisation instruction.
