The purpose of my study was to explore how first-year psychology doctoral students created and implemented value-congruent self-care practices to manage professional and personal demands. This study arose from my current experiences as a counseling psychology doctoral student and has evolved through the conversations I have had with peers and mentors. As a current doctoral student, I understand the ever-changing evolution of self-care and stress. I hope through this exploration I have further examined other psychology doctoral students experiences with balancing the demands as they further their education. My phenomenological analysis produced seven themes. The two subtle themes included recommendations and tips participants thought could enhance counseling psychology students' lives and potentially help incoming doctoral students transition into this new chapter in their lives. My study is a small step in advancing our understanding of psychology and the resources available to psychology doctoral students to improve holistic wellness through values clarification. Value-congruent self-care practices can support students in managing the effects of persistent stress, improving life-work balance, and continuing to expand best practices and professional development. I hope to open a door to essential conversations with psychologists in training about professional risks and managing those risks.
