In the wake of Hugo Chavez's death in March of 2013, the incumbent Venezuelan regime has struggled to maintain its stranglehold on the hearts and minds of a disenfranchised people without the presence of its charismatic cult of personality. However, one piece of propaganda developed for Chavez's final presidential campaign in 2012, Los Ojos de Chavez, a black and white image of the late president's disembodied eyes, has only increased in popularity and dissemination following his death. Plastered on buildings, billboards, t-shirts, and all manner of commercial goods, Los Ojos became a culturally defining motif that watches over a historically rebellious populace in the absence of a physical Chavez. Functioning as a tool of Orwellian surveillance, Los Ojos de Chavez serves both to instill a feeling of obedience in the president's former supporters and a sense of fear in his opposition. By analyzing these eyes in the broader context of Venezuela's tumultuous political history, in terms of the design's formal composition, and in comparison with outside stylistic influences, this paper seeks to understand what Los Ojos might reveal about the concept of Venezuelan national identity and how the nation's political history has helped to shape it.
