Thesis (Ph.D.)--Capella University, 2008.
There is an increased need for research that contributes to the understanding of equity in marital relationships. Equity is one factor that enables marital relationships to be satisfying and endure over time. The rates of divorce in the United States are very high for most segments of the population and the consequences of divorce can be very devastating for all of the individuals involved. This study utilizes the descriptive phenomenological psychological research approach (Giorgi & Giorgi, 2003) to gather and evaluate information about the experience of equity in long term African American relationships. In-depth interviews were conducted with 10 research participants (5 male and 5 females) who have experienced equity at some point during their relationships. The findings from this study contribute to the sparse literature on African American relationships that is currently available.
