Objective. This exploratory study compared functional independence, community participation and occupational self-perception between nine children with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) (Group I) and nine children without (Group II). Method. All parents completed demographic form and the Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scale-2nd edition (Vineland), measured functional independence; participants completed the Children's Assessment for Participation and Enjoyment and Preferences for Activities of Children (CAPE/PAC), measured community participation and the Child Occupational Self Assessment (COSA), measured occupational self-perception. Results. Group I demonstrated lower communication (F[2,16]=8.123, p<0.012), socialization (F[2,16]=28.311, p<0.001), and daily living (F[2,16]=6.925; p=.018) on the Vineland and greater perception of problems on the COSA (t[2,16]=7.439, p=0.015). No differences were seen in the CAPE/PAC composite scores. Further exploration of the CAPE/PAC items revealed that in group I the likelihood and/or frequency of engaging in musical instrument and visiting others was lower, but engaging in singing and non-team sports was higher than group II. Group I also stayed closer to family and home with singing and non-team sports. Discussion. These preliminary results support further study of participation among children with ADHD.
