Family counseling and systems theory encourage professional counselors to work with the entire family, including children. Play therapy is an accepted modality of treatment for children. However, clinicians have often excluded children from sessions, and many counselors have had little training in treating children. Few studies have been conducted on the attitudes of counselors toward incorporating children and play therapy in family counseling. This qualitative hermeneutic phenomenological study explored the attitudes and experiences of family counselors to gain insight into their perceptions and experiences with combined family counseling and play therapy. Three research questions explored counselors' attitudes about including children and play therapy in family counseling sessions, the adequacy of counselors' graduate training in preparing them for the incorporation of children and play therapy in counseling, and techniques counselors use for this integration. Ten counselors were recruited who fulfilled five criteria in terms of type and years of practice, work with children and families, and training and credentials in play therapy. A short demographic questionnaire was administered and in-depth interviews were conducted in person or via Skype. Data were analyzed with qualitative methods to reveal themes of participants' responses. Three major themes were revealed, each with subthemes. The first theme was Play Therapy Is Essential, with subthemes (a) Crucial interactions revealed, (b) Family systems perspective, (c) Play is children's language, (d) Youngest children are helped. The second theme was Graduate Training Is Deficient, with subthemes (a) Additional training necessary, (b) Self-teaching and learning, (c) Lack of training an incentive. The third theme was One Size Does Not Fit All, with subthemes (a) Flexibility in family combinations, (b) "Family" different meanings, (c) Children excluded or lead, (d) Wide range of techniques. Study findings may provide understanding, insights, information, and clinical techniques that may aid family counselors to incorporate play therapy as well as underscore the importance of including children in the counseling process for maximum help to clients.
