This study examined the leadership development of team captains and student-athletes engaged in NCAA Division III intercollegiate athletics at six, private institutions of higher education in one Commonwealth of Pennsylvania athletics conference. Student-athletes in the sports of men's and women's soccer, women's field hockey, men's and women's cross country, and women's tennis completed the self-report version of Kouzes & Posner's Student Leadership Practices Inventory (2nd ed., 2005) at the beginning and end of one playing season, or approximately ten to twelve weeks. Key findings are that team captains significantly differed from team members on all five leadership practices; that team captains exhibited significant development on all five leadership practices between the beginning and end of their season, while team members demonstrated significant development on only one leadership practice; that team context, whether an individual or interdependent sport, had little effect on the leadership practices. Results indicate that although participation in athletics has limited ability on its own to foster leadership development during one playing season, serving as a team captain provides a fertile opportunity for college students to learn and practice leadership skills.
