Future time perspective refers to the subjective perception of the future that influences individuals' actions and goals. Life span developmental theories acknowledge a shift in the way older adults perceive the future, and its' impact on their actions. Exploring future perspectives within a life-span framework promotes an integrated view of the self, an important developmental task in old age. Creative arts therapies (CAT) can offer a safe and creative environment for older adults to explore their future perspectives. As part of a large research project conducted in Italy and Israel during the COVID-19 social restrictions, the current qualitative study aims to explore the future perspectives of older adults as expressed through a creative therapeutic process of digital photocollage. Twenty-four Italian and Israeli community-dwelling older adults aged 78-92 participated in a brief online arts-based intervention integrating digital photocollages and narrative elements of dignity therapy to explore future perspectives that were expressed in the artistic process and resulting work. The visual and verbal data were analyzed within an inductive framework, using polytextual thematic analysis. Four themes were generated: (1) my future is today, (2) a glance at tomorrow, (3) the inevitable end, and (4) the creative process as a platform to expand expressions of future perspectives. The findings show that participants explored and integrated a wide range of aspects regarding their future within a life span framework and shed light on how the online arts-based intervention provides older adults with an opportunity to address their future perspectives and thoughts regarding the end of life, through digital and artistic means.
