The purpose of this study is to examine the career, musical philosophies, pedagogical techniques, and personal style of Edwin Euell Porter (1910-1998) to preserve his knowledge and create a learning model for choral musicians to study. The problems were to provide an accurate record of the past, explain his contributions to choral music, demonstrate elements of his style worthy of emulation, and give implications for future use of the study. An oral history provided the historical foundation and interviews with Porter's colleagues and collected data from archival records verified the accuracy of the information. A cross-sectional survey of twenty-one former students (seven public school musicians, seven church musicians, and seven collegiate musicians) was employed to explore Porter's contributions to choral music and discover elements of his style worthy of emulation. In addition, a conductor profile and suggestions for use of the study give implications for future studies. A one-way ANOVA was employed to assess the relationship of the mean scores of the three groups involved in the survey. Subsequent t tests and observation of the raw data assisted in supporting the results of the ANOVA. The results of the tests reveal that the church musicians scored the survey in a more positive manner and emulated more elements of Porter's style than the public school or the collegiate musicians (p < .01). The conclusions of the study were that Porter exerted a pioneering influence on choral music in Texas during the mid-twentieth century, perpetuating the organizational and musical concepts of his mentors Archie Jones and John Finley Williamson; that he trained three generations of choral conductors; that he inspired his singers to go beyond their perceived limitations; and that he modeled a style of leadership based on relational and organizational skills and personal and professional integrity.
