Armed conflict produces direct effects on combatants and non-combatants by creating casualties of war but the indirect effects are typically less visible and more difficult to measure than battlefield deaths and injuries. Studies in the public health literature and recent publications in the comparative social sciences have investigated the effects of armed conflict on health outcomes with an increasing recognition of this relationship. The majority of studies that investigate these consequences have made comparisons between countries but few examine the effects at a lower resolution. This is an important distinction since many low-intensity conflicts may be limited in geographic extent and therefore the effects may be limited to those in relatively close proximity. This study attempts to understand the extent of the health effects on individual health and explore whether smaller-scale conflicts present challenges to health that may have previously gone unnoticed. Measuring health at the aggregate level with measures such as infant mortality and life expectancy may miss important variations in health within the population and while the evidence to date points to strongly negative health effects stemming from large-scale or high-casualty conflict, there remain questions regarding the magnitude of the effects of small-scale or limited conflicts. By using individual-level survey data, this study models the effects of armed conflict on health in sub-Saharan Africa by conceptualizing and measuring health in terms of non-fatal outcomes. That is, rather than using common population health measures such as life expectancy and infant mortality that rely on death rates, the analysis will use an experiential definition that reflects individuals' health status. Using data from the World Health Organization's World Health Survey and conflict data from the Uppsala/Peace Research Institute, Oslo, this relationship is modeled using a Compound Hierarchical Ordered Probit (CHOPIT) to investigate whether relatively minor conflicts exert negative health effects that may not have been evident in previous research.
