In the 3,000-plus years of the I Ching's existence and use in China, in which Taoist and Confucian thought and philosophy have been informed by and informed its teachings, the Western world has only been engaging with the material of the I Ching for the past 100 years. Is it possible for a Taoist and Confucian oracle, with its specific cultural frame, to instruct a Western mindset on how to engage with reality? Can a Westerner raised in the culture of the United States sufficiently understand and internalize its teachings? How might this material affect someone working with a depth psychology therapist? Through my heuristic exploration of my personal 40-year journey in daily conversation with "The Sage"-as the I Ching is referred to by its community of users-I hope to shed some light on the insight provided by, and the implications of utilizing, the I Ching in therapy.
