The dissertation has two objectives: to examine John's portrayal of Jesus as the fulfillment and replacement of the Temple and to explore the possibility that the relationship between Jesus and the Temple may properly be described as typological. While many interpreters acknowledge the Johannine theme of Jesus' replacement of the Temple, few recent interpreters give attention to the nature of the relationship between Jesus and the Temple. Fewer still follow earlier interpreters in describing the relationship between Jesus and the Temple as typological. John 1:14, 1:51, 2:18-22, and 4:20-24 are often associated with Jesus' replacement of the Temple. They lead one to posit that Jesus fulfills, surpasses, and replaces the Temple. He does so as the locus of God's presence, glory, revelation, and abundant provision. Furthermore, John 2:18-22 clearly associates Jesus' role as the Temple with his death/resurrection/exaltation. John's language of lifting up and glorification marks Jesus' death/resurrection/exaltation as the decisive revelatory event whereby God reveals himself for judgment and salvation. God reveals himself by lifting up and glorifying Jesus, the true Temple. According to Isaiah, part of God's decisive action on behalf of his people, and for revealing himself to the nations, is the lifting up of the Temple above all other temples. This expectation finds its fulfillment in Jesus, the Temple's antitype. Jesus' death/resurrection/exaltation is also the means by which God provides for his people. Jesus offers his flesh and blood for the life of the world and sends the Spirit to enrich believers with the benefits of his sacrificial death. Thus he simultaneously fulfills the Passover, Feast of Tabernacles, Feast of Dedication, and the Temple. Interpreters commonly find in the Fourth Gospel a relationship between Jesus and the Temple. Some emphasize Jesus' replacement of the Temple and others emphasize his fulfillment of the Temple, but a balanced approach recognizes Jesus as the one who fulfills, surpasses, and replaces the Temple. Evidence from the Fourth Gospel demonstrates that Jesus fulfills, surpasses, and replaces the Temple in a manner consistent with a traditional conception of typology.
