Linear park development is becoming increasingly popular in city planning efforts as a way to transform obsolete infrastructure and introduce new green spaces. Linear parks are defined in this paper as multi-purpose public paths with additional amenities created from former railroad corridors, bridges, or similar infrastructure. This paper examines the 606 Park, also known as the Bloomingdale Trail, which opened in 2015 and is located in Chicago, Illinois. This thesis analyzes changes in median household income for census tracts surrounding the linear park, up to one mile away, using 5-year estimates from the American Community Survey. While prior research has identified statistically significant changes in property values surrounding a linear park development, the literature has not explored the impact on surrounding residents' income levels. A difference-in-differences model is employed to compare changes in median income in the control group, within a half mile of the park, and the treatment group, located more than a half mile away from the park. Median household income increased in the treatment and control groups at a statistically significant level, however, the treatment group did not increase at a significantly higher rate than the control group as hypothesized. This study seeks to equip policymakers and city planners with additional information on the impacts of linear parks on neighborhoods and residents, in order to foster urban development processes that are equitable and informed.
