According to the United Nations, the quest to promote women's self-worth, their ability to make choices, and their ability to influence decision-making for themselves and others is essential for the achievement of sustainable development. In some parts of the world, women are mainly faced with inequality because of being overburdened with work and their lack of power and influence. The United Nations' seventeen sustainable development goals, of which achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls is the fifth goal, are a call for action by all countries to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.Non-governmental organizations, specifically women's non-governmental organizations, play a vital role in ensuring that women's voices are heard and that they are part of decisionmaking. Women's empowerment research has broadly explored the factors that lead to gender inequality but has not fully explored the factors that influence women's empowerment in organizations. This dissertation research seeks to fill this gap by focusing on two questions: (1) What HRM practices and policies contribute to mission alignment in women NGOs? And (2) what are the external factors that influence mission alignment in Women NGOs?The dissertation research uses a mixed methods approach. The quantitative analysis, using a survey, is used to investigate the HRM practices, policies, and other external culture and factors that organizations employ to meet their mission, focusing on the relationship that exists between the mission and the HRM practices and policies of the organizations. On the other hand, the qualitative method of study is used to complement the quantitative study and also explore other internal and external factors that contribute to mission alignment in organizations. The qualitative analysis uses data collected from twenty Zoom interviews. The quantitative analysis of this dissertation found that human resource management practices influence mission alignment. Both ability-enhancing and opportunity-enhancing HRM practices help organizations stay aligned with their mission of women's development within their organization. The study also confirmed that funding is important for an organization to stay aligned with their mission, but the source of funding may not matter. The qualitative analysis found that support from community leaders and organizational culture are associated with mission alignment. These findings show how intentional and important it is for women's NGOs to empower not only the clients and people they serve, but also the employees, especially female employees within their organization.
