Despite the efforts of the Association of Certified Professional Accountants (AICPA), the National Association of Black Accountants (NABA), and the National Society of Black Certified Public Accountants (NSBCPA), there are a limited number of Black/African American accounting professionals. The purpose of this qualitative case study was to explore why there is a lack of Black/African American college graduates majoring in accounting. The research consisted of semi-structured one-on-one virtual interviews with 14 Black/African American accounting graduates and virtual interviews with a focus group comprised of three original participants. The research instrument included a questionnaire that was field tested by accounting professors, higher education administrators, and accounting professionals. The results of the research indicated Blacks/African Americans are underrepresented in the accounting profession and have experienced various challenges in pursuit of their higher education and career in accounting, including lack of diversity, campus connections, lack of mentorship and faculty engagement, and microaggression. This study proposes early exposure to accounting, increased faculty-to-student engagement, increased diversity of accounting faculty, and improved mentorship opportunities to help resolve this deficit in representation and inclusivity of Blacks/African Americans in the accounting profession.
