•Briefly discuss the situation involving intolerable marriages and how some clerics choose to resolve those issues in an internal forum setting. •Discuss how resolving intolerable marriages in an internal forum is incompatible with Church law, particularly bringing a matter addressed in an internal forum out into an external forum.•Overview of what the 1983 Code of Canon Law provides to address those who have separated and/or divorced from their spouse and are seeking or have entered a new relationship, mainly the annulment process.•Discuss recent changes to legislation that simplified the annulment process, particularly the changes found in Mittis Iudex Dominus Iesus. •Provide some suggestions on how to best address intolerable marriages without bringing the matter into an internal forum.
