Being a multilingual student in a foreign language country brings with it many challenges; challenges that can be academic, cultural, social, and above all linguistic. Learning a second language in an effective way that facilitates socialization and academic performance is a reality that multilingual learners at Swann Middle School face every day, which is why they receive instruction in English as a second language as part of their supplemental curriculum. While teachers are aware of the students who belong to this program, in the specific case of ELA, they sometimes lack information about (1) the standards that multilingual students learn in their English class, (2) the results they obtain on their annual ACCESS test, and (3) how this test determines their level of proficiency in the language they are learning. This paper summarizes the research on the English language program established at the school under Guilford County guidelines and presents a workshop that guides ELA teachers in interpreting the county adopted WIDA program, and how to interpret the data obtained from the annual language proficiency test for a possible multidisciplinary classroom process between ELD and ELA.
