There is a plethora of ways to define the word "terrorism," but the essence of the word is to describe an act of violence perpetrated by an individual or a group to enact political change. Amongst the types of terrorism that exist is domestic terrorism, which defines itself more specifically by being perpetrated by citizens of a country within that country. In the United States, domestic terrorism is on the rise, and it is coming from many different directions and for many different reasons. The type of terrorism that the country is increasingly seeing is from far-left, far-right, and religious extremist groups. Far-left extremists are concerned primarily with social and economic disparities and injustices, while far-right extremists are concerned with ideas of racial superiority, opposition towards large government, and certain political agendas. Religious extremists find their motivation in their faith and draw from their various faith-based texts and value systems. This paper will aim to examine U.S. extremist groups as defined by these parameters to analyze their ideologies, where they come from, and how they act on their ideologies. Additionally, the recruitment methods of each group will be examined to see how they acquire their followings. As well, this paper will examine how these groups act, where they choose to act, and who they choose to act on when committing violent acts.Ultimately, this paper will use its findings to determine which of these various extremist groups is to be of most concern to the safety of this country and its inhabitants.
