The research problem addressed in this study is that the leadership and management strategies that United States (U.S.) Army Special Forces (SF) senior noncommissioned officers (NCOs) used to be successful during the Global War on Terror (GWOT) have not been fully elucidated. The purpose of this qualitative phenomenological study was to explore the leadership and management strategies U.S. Army SF Battalion Command Sergeants Major (CSMs) used to be successful during the GWOT. The study investigated the following research question: what were the leadership and management strategies employed by U.S. Army SF Battalion CSMs with exposure to multiple overseas deployments during the GWOT? The study utilized semistructured interviews to collect data from 10 retired SF Battalion CSMs who served during the GWOT between September 11, 2001, and December 31, 2022. The seven major themes that emerged from the collected data included taking care of soldiers (sub-themes: soldier well-being and autonomy), experience (sub-themes: preparation and readiness and mastering the basics), focusing on training (sub-themes: coach, mentor, advise and lowering standards), communication (sub-themes: restrictive or poor guidance and delegation), adaptability (subtheme: understand the operational environment), integrity (sub-theme: honesty and trust), and leadership presence (sub-themes: competency and discipline). These identified themes provide practical leadership and management strategies that the SF Regiment can implement across all operational domains. The emerging knowledge delivers insight into two decades of lived leadership experiences and suggests future application by the next generation of SF leaders seeking to find success in fighting and winning America's subsequent military conflicts.
