This study examines the role of institutional effects on state stability. The Quality of Government Data from the University of Gutenberg, provides a data set from 98 countries, including 21 that are experiencing some level of conflict or instability. The primary institutions studied are the armed forces, police, justice system and political parties, with public confidence used as a metric of effectiveness. The data was analyzed through three different modeling approaches: ordinary least squares regression, random forest model and a K nearest neighbors model. These models determined the effect of these institutions on stability and incorporated region to assess how significant regional effects were to stability. The study examined four case studies to assess how the quantitative analysis informs the outcomes, with two of the case studies representing cases of a degree of U.S. intervention.
