In the years preceding the pandemic, the consumer-packaged goods (CPG) industry faced considerable turbulence, marked by shifting consumer behaviors driven by factors such as pricing pressures due to retail consolidation, commodity price volatility, a growing emphasis on sustainability, and notable generational shifts among consumers. This industry's unique product mix, encompassing essentials like food and beverages along with semi-discretionary items such as personal care and household supplies, intensified supply chain challenges with regulatory and compliance cost considerations. With the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, vulnerabilities within the global supply chain were exacerbated and exposed, revealing a lack of visibility into shifting consumer demand, disruptions in transportation, and inadequacies in the supply of essential products and raw materials. As the world progresses beyond the pandemic, businesses must navigate a supply chain landscape fundamentally altered by these events. This new landscape challenges organizations to adapt to a dynamic environment with emergent supply chain disruption risks. This research proposes that CPG companies leverage a decision-support tool to enhance their capacity to identify, assess, and effectively mitigate potential high-probability, high-impact points of failure within their supply chains. This study explores the creation and validation of a decision-support tool specifically designed for the unique challenges within the CPG industry. Employing quantitative methodologies, the research not only formulates this tool but also evaluates its proficiency in identifying and determining if specific risk mitigation strategies should be considered. The ultimate objective is to equip CPG companies with a robust method to proactively navigate supply chain disruptions, ensuring enhanced resilience and sustainability in the post-pandemic landscape.
