Asian-Americans in American films are depicted as stereotypes from the computer geek to the foolish sidekick or the lotus blossom and the dragon lady, which creates a lack of identifiability for Asian-Americans and Caucasian Americans due to the lack of multidimensionality in the characters. This study used generative criticism from the rhetorical tradition to find common themes within the explanatory schema of the warrior hero's journey for righteousness or a noble path in American martial arts films with Chinese actors or characters. Twelve out of ninety films were chosen as a sample and placed in three categories: superhero, female warrior, and the kung fu expert. From these films, quantitative data was taken from the fight scenes based on the number of opponents, the purpose of the fight, and kills versus saves, as well as qualitative data, finding the themes of the family legacy and filial piety, courage despite fear, and the balance of opposites revealed in the coding process. Results indicate a correlation between family and the hero's negative behaviors and traits showed whether the warrior hero went on a hero's journey and tackled the internal self, which arose in three kinds: the upright, the conflicted, and the aggressive.
