Wheelchair users often have to DIY tools for daily tasks due to a lack of innovation in lifestyle accessories. Independent Living Aids provide manual wheelchairs with added functionality, such as tray tables, storage, and improved mobility while shopping. My motivation to solve the challenge of transporting large and heavy bags started when I saw a wheelchair user struggling in an NYC laundromat. I studied the market, interviewed people with disabilities and engaged on blogs and YouTube. Through that, I gained further insight into the pain points of individuals with disabilities. My solution took inspiration from various industries such as aeroplane tray tables, hospital products, street furniture, and architectural hardware. In the end, the solution was guided by behavioural observations and real-world constraints, which ensured both manufacturability and physical realities were considered.
